When I was in the second grade, I was a 7 year old girl, and I used to play a lot with the boys. I spent most of my play time in school with them. We played toys that were so called "for boys." This included wrestling figures, cars, soldiers, superheroes, etc. I remembered my teacher asking me if I was a boy or a girl. I answered her with "I am a girl teacher." She then asked me, "So why are you playing with toys that are for boys? You are not supposed to play with that because you are a girl." At that time, I was so confused because I thought that all toys were meant for all kids. I felt a bit embarrassed because all my classmates were looking at me. What made it worse was when my teacher asked me again, "Are you a tomboy?" Recalling, I felt like my teacher had a negative tone when she asked me that, as if playing with "toys that are for boys" were something bad. Afterwards, I went to the girls who were playing with dolls and sat there for awhile thinking "Why can't I play with whatever toy I want?" Being a kid, of course, I just proceeded and played after and did not think about what happened.
Looking back, I realized that our environment greatly affects how gender stereotyping is still present in today's time. I was only a child back then but I also realized that childhood is a vital stage in the formation of who we are today and how we think. Children often learn what it means to be a man or a woman through play and this includes the toys they choose, the clothes they wear, and many more.
