Multiple transferences entail a process whereby members develop intense feelings for certain others in a group

Multiple transferences entail a process whereby members develop intense feelings for certain others in a group; an individual may “see” in others some significant figure in his or her present life. Multiple transferences allow members to explore the parallels between their past and present experience and to acquire a new understanding of their dynamics. Would you find it useful for group members to identify and explore potential transferences toward other members and the group leader?

Answer:

As for me, I found it very useful for group members to identify and explore potential transferences toward other members and the group leader. Because transference may be positive or negative. Either way can benefit in different ways. Positive transference can lead one group member to view other members as kind, concerned, or otherwise helpful. Negative transference, on the other hand might cause one person in a group to be directly angry or show painful feelings toward other group member. Same goes around with the group leader. But on the long run, they may still be able to use these kind of emotions to assess and help their emotions grow and achieve greater understanding about themselves. After all, social relationship is an utmost importance.

When transference occurs in a group, a leader may be able to better understand his or her members by gaining knowledge of the gathered feelings and, through this new understanding may help the members achieve results and recovery. By understanding how transference is occurring, a mental health professional may be better able to understand both a person's condition and/or aspects of the person's early life that affect them in the present.
