Explanation
Emerging adulthood has been proposed as a new life stage between adolescence and young adulthood, lasting roughly from ages 18 to 25. Five features make emerging adulthood distinctive: identity explorations (the process of exploring one's identity and traits), instability (the period of turmoil), self-focus (the individual's increased focus on self and different areas related to self), feeling in-between adolescence and adulthood, and a sense of broad possibilities for the future.

According to Erikson, young adulthood is a period of transition and change characterized by life decisions that help an individual resolve the ongoing identity crisis. Choosing a particular career path and acquiring independence in terms of living away from parents are some of the common transitions that young adults undergo in order to establish an independent sense of identity.

Research shows that cultural factors play a major role in determining the extent to which certain decisions would impact a young adult's life. For example, in collectivistic cultures moving out of the parent's house and living alone is considered a big step, and an individual experiences significant amounts of stress and anxiety while taking such a decision, while in the west it is a completely acceptable and normal thing to do after 18 years of age and therefore is not as anxiety-inducing. However, other factors such as discrimination based on race, gender, ethnicity, and class might pose problems for a young adults trying to live on their own even in the west.

According to a study young adult participants marked being able to choose their own career paths or options as the best expression of their freedom and autonomy. This was found to be especially true for collectivistic cultures such as Japan where every life decision of an individual is commented on and assessed by the parents and their opinions matter significantly.
