What are the elements of the scientific method?

Answer and ExplanationSolution by a verified expert

Explanation
Scientists use scientific methods to investigate the physical world. According to scientific methods, scientific hypothesis, theory, or law of nature is not valid unless its predictions are in agreement with experimental results. Hypothesis, theory and law are some of the elements of scientific method. Detailed explanation of elements of scientific method is as follows. Scientific methods can be broken down into following elements. First is observation where any scientific method begins. The curiosity of scientists leads them to come across some fundamental questions about the observed events. Like, according to a famous story, falling of an apple led Newton to ask questions which led to discovery of gravity. Therefore careful observation of nature is necessary for formation of questions which may or may not lead to scientific discoveries. Second element is the hypothesis. Once scientists have observed something, they try to give an explanation for it based on logic and experience. In other words, a hypothesis is a possible answer or an educated guess based on logical thinking. Formation of hypotheses is necessary because it gives a fundamental idea to work on. Third element is experiments. The formed hypothesis is tested under controlled conditions to see if the results of the test confirm the hypothetical assumptions made from the hypothesis and it is also checked if these results can be duplicated based on the hypothesis. This testing is called an experiment. Fourth element is theory. If the hypothesis passes enough experimental tests and generates new predictions that also prove correct(based on further experimentations), then the hypothesis can be accepted as a theory . A theory is a well tested explanation of observed physical phenomena. Fifth and final element is law. If a theory has undergone experimental tests many times under different circumstances and every time proves to be successful in explaining the results of the experiments, then that theory may be accepted by scientists as a law. A law is a concise statement in words or mathematical equations that describes a fundamental relationship of nature.
