Thymol is very slightly soluble in water and very soluble in 1.0M\mathrm{NaOH}1.0MNaOH. Explain. |
Answer and Explanation
Answer
Answer:
Thymol is highly non polar because of the presence of;
1) Hydrophobic benzene ring
2) Hydrophobic isopropyl group ((CH3)2CH-)
3) Hydrophobic methyl (-CH3) group
These three entities in the group make the thymol molecules difficult to mix with water.
But, this molecule also have acidic proton (attached to -OH (hydroxyl) group which can interact with OH- group (from NaOH) and make acid-base complex so in a single sentence we can say that thymol is miscible in 1.0 M NaOH.
